Is There Any Point To Motion Control?

image

Face it, you’ve already made your decision. What with all the advertising that’s been splattered throughout game shops and on websites since E3, I would be surprised if you haven’t already made your mind up about Kinect or Move. You either love it, or you hate it. Simple as that. But have you asked yourself perhaps the most important question? Don’t look confused. Behind the shiny tech demos there’s a question that needs answering. The Wii has so far failed to reach it’s full potential in terms of hardcore games, and thus it’s up to Kinect and Move to prove to gamers, what is the point in motion control, and does it even have any form of benefit to gamers?

The Wii is dead. It’s gone, and we all know it. There’s no more innovation left in the old girl. She’s tired, she’s had a day and now she’s going to sit the rest of her life out regurgitating Carnival Games and games that end with Z’s instead of S’s. Even the pure, first party games lack any sort of pop that was promised when the Wii was first revealed. It’s limited form of motion control is boring, and we no longer care. However with Kinect and Move, we have the finally have the opportunity to combine top of the range motion control kit, with HD graphics and in Sony’s case, 3-D. Are these a match made in gaming heaven, or a gimmick worthy of the Red Steel award for shittyness?

image

Lets think of it firstly, in a positive light. Games with motion control are fun. I remember first getting my Wii on launch day. I loved it. I stayed up all night, and for the majority of the day after, playing Wii Sports and of course Zelda: Twilight Princess. I remember thinking “God, this is it. This works, it’s what we all needed!”. Move promises to do everything the Wii can’t. Precise, handheld devices attached to a high definition console. Sony’s controllers are the Wii HD, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. With the quality of games coming out for the PS3 at the moment, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some innovate and original IP’s being revealed this year exclusive for Move that are actually worth buying. Considering the price of the console and the controllers, it’s also a given that we won’t be seeing the likes of Carnival Games HD anytime soon either.

However it’s Kinect that’s the most intriguing of the two. Controller free gaming is still, even one year on from it’s initial reveal, mind boggling. Kinect gives developers free reign over anything they would want to do. You only need to look at the Star Wars tech demo from E3, to understand that developers are no longer just limited to two controllers, but your entire body. There is no limit to what they could do, and I’ll be the first to say that I expect us to be constantly shocked by what Kinect games will be offering us in the near future. Running, jumping, kicking, punching, shooting, swimming… It’s all there. Most importantly, this free reign means that the potential for quality, hard core titles is higher than it ever was on the Wii. No more on rails shooters folks, Kinect offers us the real deal.

image

However, what both these devices have failed to show us so far, is any decent titles. True, the potential is present, but that’s all we have. The potential for something truly groundbreaking is coming, but until we see it in action all we have to go on is speculation. At E3 this year, both Microsoft and Sony failed to make any lasting impressions in terms of titles. Sony showed a few rough and tumble tech demos and that Ratchet and Clank…. thing but apart from that the only memorable title was that Dead Space Extraction was coming to the Ps3 with move support. A port of a Wii game? Not a good start Sony. At all. What potential is there for innovation, when already you’re porting over on-rails shooters from a less powerful console? For shame.

Kinect was also suffering from Wii fever, with Kinect Sports, that river rafting game, a dancing… dance… Oh God it bores me to even think about it. Kinect showed off a lot of awesome tech demos, but it showed nothing but Wii Clones in terms of releasable titles. At least Playstation Move had the common decency to not patronise it’s market with Wii Sports on the Ps3. Kinect showed us childish, colourful, fun filled party games, titles we’ve already seen hundreds of times before on the Wii. Microsoft were alienating it’s market, and this is where the alarm bells should be starting to ring. The Wii showed of a lot of hardcore titles upon it’s release, but 90% of them turned out to be nothing more than tech demos. Should we be giving Kinect and Move then benefit of the doubt, or is it a given that history is about to repeat itself?

image

I want to like motion controllers. I really want to like Kinect, especially, because I can honestly see myself jumping around my living room, holding my arm like a shotgun barking orders and my team mates as I storm an office building, shooting terrorists. I know it can be done, because all of the technology present at E3 proved that it was possible. Yet, I see nothing of the sort being shown to me. No upcoming titles, not even a tech demo. Where’s the hardcore market Microsoft?

As for Sony… nyergh. Move is such a shameless Wii clone that I can’t even  begin to describe my disgust for it. As long as I don’t see “MOVE COMPATIBLE” on Uncharted 3, I’ll happily let it die in a corner. I don’t mind pointless gimmicks being present, just as long as they don’t suffocate me from all aspects of my gaming experience.

In short, Motion control has the potential of becoming something brilliant. Sensational, even. If Microsoft and Sony play their cards right they could have something seriously innovate in the works. In the meantime? I’m sceptical. What they’ve shown us so far is just HD Wii games, and I can’t see that as being acceptable six months or a year into it’s release. Will we see some quality hardcore titles that benefit? Only time will tell. Until then, keep your money in a safe place, because you could well just make a decision that you’ll either appreciate making, or regret for a long time to come.

LittleBigPlanet 2 Confirmed – First Details Make Me Drool

image

LittleBigPlanet 2 was confirmed yesterday. It’s nothing really surprising, seeing as though it’s one of the biggest selling games on the PS3. However, what is surprising is the improvements the developers are promising over the original.

Media Molecule are basically saying that in LittleBigPlanet 2 you won’t be limited to making levels. Instead, you’ll be able to make entire games from scratch using the in-game editor. Sound exciting? You bet it does. Apparently one Dev has made a Sackboy version of Command and Conquer. Oh yes ladies and nerds, it’s no longer just a platformer.

I love the sound of this. Even the cynic inside of me is agreeing that Media Molecule will deliver. LittleBigPlanet is still one of the most original games I’ve played in the past five years, so I’m literally gagging for the sequel.

No, I’m not going to comment on the Playstaton Move support because I don’t care about it.

Five Things That Have Been On My Mind Today

1) Goddamn Valve, you are very good at making promo videos and launch trailers. I take my hat off to you, fine sirs and ladysirs. However, I have no intention of playing The Passing until the weekend. I apologise.

2) Why is Perfect Dark so goddamn hard on the… hardest difficulty? It took me three hours of solid playing to get past the first level. I hate old games, yet love them in equal measure. Damn you Rare.

3) Why isn’t Pokémon free? Also, why haven’t governments checked this game for mind control? Why do I want it so much? It’s embarrassing!

4) Should I put Ads on my blog? I suppose it would look a little less flash, but it’s free money and I like that idea.

5) Why hasn’t Sony came over and fixed my PS3 yet? It seems that the gaming God’s have forbidden me from ever finishing GTA4.

Playstation Move Advert.

Although I'm not too keen on the idea, this just proves how awesome Sony are. They blatantly take the piss out of Natal and Wii here, which is always a good thing.

Motion Bloody Control.

image

I am sick to my fecking stomach with these ridiculous motion control devices. Project Natal, Ps3 “Wand”…

Look, guys, there was a specific reason why I left the Nintendo Camp for you two and it wasn’t because I have a passionate fear of moustached Italian men, so stop showing me your paedophile simulators and waving your phallic orb sticks in my face because I don’t care.

I mean come on! All I want to do is play a game the old fashioned way. Is it really too much to ask?

PlayStation Fail…

image

Due to…. “Calendar Issues” I couldn’t play Bioshock 2 on my Ps3 today which… sucked.

Apparently the consoles were effectively collapsing in on themselves when you turned them on due to them thinking it was a leap year or something equally as ridiculous…

Anyway, it was probably a load of overblown nonsense but I haven’t risked it, just incase.

Playstation <3

I think I've actually fallen in love with my Ps3. Like, seriously. Before Christmas, I treated both my PS3 and Xbox in the same way. As games consoles that I enjoyed using. I always held the PS3 in high regard, of course, but I liked them both.

I got a new hard drive for my PS3 for Christmas (320GB, a vast improvement from the measly 450GB that I originally had) and it seems to have just opened up a completely new world. Suddenly, I'm not limited by what I can download and install, or even put onto it. Do I want to (finally) traverse the realms of Playstation Home in it's entirety? Do I want to store pictures and HD movies? Do I want to save as many games as I want?

I think I was unfortunate in that I bought my PS3 last August when the 40GB models were the only ones available, because it's seriously hindered my overall experience with the console. Now though? It's amazing.

"Playstation 3 is teh winnar" Claims Man In Big Hat.

This delightful image above, is the highest rated games of this year according to my favourite review site ever (*cough* I shamelessly plugged you... so... you know... favours... *cough*) Metacritic.com.

Incase you're blind, half of those are Playstation 3 titles which instantly makes the Playstation 3 the best thing to ever happen to the Earth ever. Which is great. Until you think about it for more than twenty seconds.

Now I don't mean to be a cynic here but... only two of those games are exclusives. Uncharted 2 and God of War Collection. One's a sequel and ones just a cash in of old titles (albeit very good old titles but you get the drift. They're PS2 games). The Xbox ones are the same, except only one exclusive and that's a third installment and the DS makes only instance and it's a fabulous exclusive... of a long running franchise. And it's just been released on the PSP.

Kinda depressing really. There's only one IP there and it's Arkham Asylum but even then it's based on characters from other mediums and the story was from a DC comic under the same name released over fifteen years ago. Oh and it's multiformat.

Still, well done Playstation because I enjoyed Uncharted 2 to an insane degree. You deserve all the rewards in the world for that title alone.

Speed Freaks

Yesterday I mentioned a game called Speed Freaks. After writing the blog, I went on a bit of a YouTube hunt and found the video above.

I was having palpitations, I was so nostalgic.

Happy 15th Birthday Playstation!

It's fifteen years today since the PlayStation one was released to the public. Not only does that make me feel ridiculously old, mainly because I was two at the time, but it also makes me feel proud to have been alive when it was released. I was first given my PlayStation a the tender age of five back in good old 1997. I had a game called Speed Freaks and I needed nothing more. To be fair, although the SNES was my first ever console the PlayStation was my most favoured.

Since then I've owned all of Sony's home consoles, bar the PsOne (the slim one) and the PS2 Slimline and have never been let down by a Sony product, to this day in fact, with my glorious monstrosity that is the PlayStation 3.

So Bravo Sony, because you've given me a lot of memories in your 15 years of gaming dominance. Keep going strong my Japanese brethren. From Crash Bandicoot and Metal Gear Solid, to Resident Evil and Uncharted, you've always given me quality gaming at it's best.

Who would have known that a lump of grey plastic could have left such an impression on our culture, and out hearts.

Because let's face it, we all had one :P

New Playstation Adverts

I absolutely adore the new PlayStation adverts. I think they're just American, but nevertheless. My favourites the Uncharted 2 one, but it does raise a few points regarding sexism within adverts..... Still funny though :D

Enjoy, and please leave a comment if anyone see's these on British TV!

New PS3 Update

Firstly, haven't been blogging a lot because It's been my birthday and I've also been living in my girlfriends house since Monday.

Anyway, a new PS3 firmware update came out yesterday and it did, as usual, sweet fuck all, but it did offer a really interesting new feature (apart from the BBC iPlayer).

Sony have seemed to have made all of the icons bigger as well as adding a "What's new" icon which lets you choose from even bigger icons depicting new releases etc.

It's all very Xbox...and this annoys me.

The Playstation was always the more sophisticated of the two, more professional and more adult ,but just these little changes have actually threatened of completely destroying this image.

Anyway, a little rant, but it's what you read this tripe for isn't it?

Updates, Updates, Updates…

I came home this evening and decided, like I do every Thursday, to check the Playstation store for goodies for me to purchase. As I booted it up, it informed that an update had become available. “The rumored glory of Version 2.7?” I hear you roar? The very same.

So I sat and waited for it download (40 minutes spent reading “Making History” by Stephan Fry is certainly not time wasted), and by the time it had finished I was literally frothing with excitement. Were the rumors true? Has Sony finally upgraded their online community to a level that could directly challenge Xbox Live? Has Sony’s day finally come, and together me and my Sony brethren will traverse the plains of this generation, and take the crown from Microsoft's head!?!

No. Basically, the rumors were bull turd. All it added was this really quite poor instant messaging service. Also, Peggle still isn’t on the Playstation store.

Then I went on the Xbox and that needed to update too. Then I lost all my Dead Rising saves.

Basically, I’m pretty fucking fed up if I’m honest xD

What Will Become Of Them?

I’ve had abdominal pain since Monday, and therefore haven't been to college since then this week. After visiting the Doctor this morning (in which a large portion of my Urine was stolen and my stomach was molested) It turns out I did something that pulled it, and therefore have to rest it. It was funny though, because she said I must have been over-exercising, to which I replied that I must have just excersised, because I haven't done any form of physical activity since I was born. Well, if you don’t include the Wii.

So basically, I’ve been bored. Very bored. Yesterday I managed to entertain myself by reading the whole back catalogue of Penny Arcade and by playing Far Cry 2, but today I was at a loss. So I looked under my bed. You know as you do. Under there, I found my Gamecube and my Playstation 1. I was overjoyed! The last time I played a Playstation game was Spyro, and that was before I got my PS3 in August last year. So I dug it out, plugged it in, played it for about 10 minutes then wandered off for food.

As I was making myself a sandwich, I couldn’t help thinking that in give or take 5 years time, it could my PS3 rotting under there. Maybe even an Xbox, or a PSP as well (hey, who knows what the future holds). It was odd, because I physically couldn’t imagine ideally looking under my Bed, or in a cupboard, and seeing a PS3  covered in dust, and feeling only mild nostalgia or quaint enthusiasm towards it. If I saw my PS3 in a cupboard today, I’d freak out. I payed too much for it. Hell I’m afraid to touch it half the time.

So there you go, a little something to think about. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m downloading Counter Strike and I still don’t know why.

Irony. Pure Irony

Although I'm a fan of the Xbox, I do enjoy taking the piss out of it. Yea It's harsh, because lets face it, not a lot of people like the Playstation but I do it anyway mainly to annoy my friend because (and I'm sorry to say this Ryan) he's an Xbox fanboy. So while I'm bragging about trivial things such as disk space and processors, and he retaliates with points such as better games and a better online I always get him with what can only be described as every Xbox owners worst nightmare. Red Ring of Death.

Like the flu, the yellow pages or Graham Norton it happens to everyone. It happened to me, and It's happened to him and everytime I used that argument he never had anything to say back to me. Well, nothing I'd feel comfortable about typing on my girlfriends computer anyway.

But then last night, after my New Year celebrations, I decided to see if I could clock Mirrors Edge as I was already up to chapter 6 out of 8, so I thought I'd be able to do it. So I booted it up, started playing and then it crashed. It didn't bother me at first, because I presumed it was the disc but after four attempts on Mirrors Edge, one attempt on LittleBigPlanet (the game wouldn't load) and then an attempt on COD5 (again, the game wouldn't load) I panicked. I went straight to the Sony EU forums, and posted my problem. This morning I managed to get Mirrors Edge working, but I'm still worried about whether it's a hard drive problem.

Anyway, the whole point of this story is that when I told my friend last night, he gave a fantastic reply that I thought would be perfect for today's post.

"Definitely Sony's way of saying Happy New Year mate."

The Most Basic Human Instinct: Insult

I was on Home last night and I came across a few guys talking about Timesplitters 4 and how much they were looking forward to it. So, of course, I joined in the conversation and told them about how Free Radical have closed down (While body popping, of course). We were talking for a while about Timesplitters, Second sight and in the meantime a few other guys had joined in the conversation and soon enough we had a fully fledged argument over which was better. EA or Activision. You know as you do.

But of course, one guy came over and called us nerds. And being nerds, we all decided to then insult HIM. So there you go. After only 25 minutes of talking to complete strangers there was a “Yer Mar” joke thrown in. Isn’t meeting new friends wonderful?

Home Life

As it’s no doubt became apparent, I’m addicted to Home and everything about it. Last night I as traversing this marvelous world with a good friend of mine (Bucko), I realised just how complicated and detailed this world was.

The bowling alley is a brilliant example. Jut sit down on a lane, wait for three more people then play! That may sound stupid but it works so well. When one guy bowls, you can sit and chat to the other guys playing with you. I was having a very detailed chat with one guy about what new content would be added on Thursday (if anyone's interested, he speculated the trophy room, the red bull area and a LOT of new furniture and clothes.) It was fantastic, and when I was brutally beaten me and Bucko played a lengthy game of pool (which I once again lost). The pool was seamless, simple and ridiculously detailed. Just like it was promised. Then Bucko went to bed and I played the arcade game of “Echochrome” for a long, long time (Which to my surprise, was not only good but gave me loads of new clothes!)

If your a PS3 user and you haven't downloaded this, please do. Come visit me! I have a mansion!

Home Is Where My Wallet Is

At 9PM yesterday, Home went live. By the time I'd downloaded and installed Home, which in all honesty only took 8 minutes, I was literally jumping with excitement. I couldn't wait!

Of course, Sony must have installed an excitement sensor in the SixAxis, because it wouldn't let me log in until half past. So I took my first tentative steps into the world of Home irritated and frustrated. Not a good start.

In all honesty, my experience with Home yesterday wasn't a good one. I couldn't grasp the Avatar creator and my character had a head the size of the fecking moon and a nose like a coat hanger. There also seemed to be a lack of clothes. Again, not a good start.

To sum this all up, last night I was annoyed by the servers that kept timing out, my first apartment and the lack of furniture in it, the lack of decent clothes that are free and the lack of any content this early on. I went to bed annoyed.

So anyway I woke up this morning and booted it up to see if I would have a change of opinion. I did. In fact, my opinion changed so much I even bought the Summer House and a few clothes.

At the moment, Home is nothing more than Habbo Hotel in HD, or a less complicated and more console friendly version of Second Life. A lot of people may be complaining about the fact that Sony "Haven't lived up to their promises" but all I have to say to them is wait. Homes being advertised as an open beta version for a reason. Were looking at a very simple version of what has the potential to become one of the greatest experiment in gaming since the rumble pack.. Ok that was a bit of a shitty comparison but surely you get the idea.

You could say that Mii's were merely a test of what Avatars can do, the Xbox experimented with them in HD with limited community aspects and Home.. Well. Home has taken avatars and made them into something worthwhile. Now if you excuse me, I'm going Home.

I Want To Go HOME

Just like every other Playstation owner today, I’ve been waiting for Home, Playstations answer to the New Xbox Experience (ok, so not quite. But Home has avatars as well, so I'm going to stick with what I’ve just said)

Personally I’m just pleased that it’s available either today or tomorrow. We were promised a release before Christmas and to a lot of us that meant a Christmas Eve release so this is brilliant news for everyone.

If you too are desperate to play, keep an eye out here for constant updates from one of the developers!

Full review tomorrow (I hope!)

Warped

I downloaded Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped on my PS3 this morning. It’s brilliant, just like I remembered and it looks slightly upscaled on the PS3. To be honest the only noticeable difference is that the sound quality is 100X better than playing it on a Playstation 1.

So I know what I’m playing up until Christmas! Which is like three weeks away. Which is worrying. I’ve almost been doing this blog for four months now.
