God of Phwoarrrr

image

God of War 3 is possibly the best looking thing I’ve ever seen.

Seriously.

It’s just wow. I don't know how anyone can make games this fantastic. It's not even the graphics that are jaw dropping either. The gameplay, characters, locations and story are all of a cinematic quality. It's like one long cutscene. A bloody good cutscene.

Shame I can't play it though. Bloody PS3.

Activision: A Company To Fear

image

So Call of Duty: Black Ops was announced today. It’s being released next November, it’s being developed by Treyarch, It’s set in Vietnam…Blah, Blah, Blah.

We can all assume it’ll have a rank based multiplayer mode, with custom classes, perks and DLC maps. We’re all positive it’ll have an “Award Winning”, “In-Depth” story and of course it’ll have one famous actor/actress doing some voice work.

Thing about Activision is, it has a habit of making really original IP’s stale by releasing them every ten minutes. Guitar Hero especially.

I feel sorry for Bungie…

Gears Of War 3: A Shocking Reveal?

image

So the Gears of War 3 trailer was released. It had a load of people dead and left as nothing but ash, standing screaming etc. Fairly cool. Then Dom comes running through them looking like Bear Grills made a baby with an actual bear. He comes running through all these dead ash people, just smashing them up etc. and then the locust come and they shoot and… you get the idea. It’s Gears of War. What else do you expect. So far so Epic, in all sense of the word.

Then two really strange things happen.

1) Marcus turns up with short sleeves, making him look like someone advertising a gay cruise to Pompeii.Still, at least I now know what makes a muscle man look instantly gay. Short sleeves! Who would have guessed?

image

2) A woman turns up. With a gun. Yea you read that right. She turns up, with a gun and starts shooting locust. No she’s not Anya, and no she doesn’t have huge man shoulders. Still, there’s going to be some discussion amongst the internet as to whether she’s a stereotypical video gaming female (i.e. there will be a point where she has her chesticles on display in a completely impractical situation) or so mega butch she may as well be Cole in a blonde wig. Actually… well Epic? Please? For me?

I like it. In fact I love it. Looks to be more of the same but there’s so much potential for some REALLY good storytelling. Take Dom, he looks like a broken man. Beard out of control, his hairline receding. He seems clumsy, and when he falls and sees the locust raise his gun? He really doesn’t care. I’m probably looking too much into this, but this looks to be possibly game of the year 2011.

Trailers below.

Heart of Darkness

image

You know when you see something and you remember it but…. not really anything specific about it?

Well someone mentioned an old PS1/PC game called Heart of Darkness to me the other day and this happened. A friend of mine had it on the PS1 when I was like, seven, and I used to adore watching him play it.  So I hunted down some videos and Youtube and my God. It was an absolute GEM of a title! Beautifully inspired pre-rendered environments that you could interact with, a really dark and sinister plot and of course, some pretty classic side scrolling action (albeit Abes Oddesy).

I am so hunting this down.

League of Legends

image

So I’ve been playing League of Legends (or LoL, as it’s often called, which I just find fantastic) quite obsessively these past few days. A friend recommended it to me on the basis that it was “very similar” to the cult Warcraft 3 mod Defence of the Ancients. To be honest, the only reason I gave it a download was because it sounded a bit like Warcraft 3 and… well it’s free to play.

I’ve been graciously rewarded for my choice. League is a very simple, yet addictive game that works like this. The player picks a character to play as, or a “Summoner” as they’re referred to in game, which is basically a hero character that you play as. All of these characters have four magic abilities and a basic attack that varies from punch or cast. Then you’re placed into a game with 9 others (5 Vs. 5 games) and the game begins. The basic premise is each base is defended by towers and waves of units which guard the main paths leading to your base. In the centre of each base is a building that must be destroyed to win the game.

image

So the premise is deviously simple, yet in practice it becomes this surreal game of fantasy tug of war. See, these towers are pretty powerful so you end up relying on the waves of units to act as human shields in order to push forward. Your summoner can level up to a maximum of level 18 in a single game, gaining more powerful levels of their abilities as you progress (as well as gold to purchase ability boosts) which means that what starts off as a quite relaxing game of click- to – kill – minions ends up as a furious war between ten completely different magical beings, all of them mercilessly slaughtering each other in an effort to just… destroy… that… one last… tower…

It becomes a death match, near the end. Once you hit level 5 it’s no longer about killing the minions. It’s about getting a positive kill streak by chasing down enemy summoners for a huge XP boost, as well as attempting to aid your minions is progressing… you get the idea. It’s a simple concept, but strikingly complex in practice.

image

Of course, the beautiful thing about this game isn’t the fresh and addictive nature of it’s game play or the quite frankly gorgeous visual style. No, it’s all in the fact that you don’t have to pay a penny to play it. Sure, there are additional buffs and enhancements you can buy with real money, but if you play enough games online you’ll earn enough “Riot points” to acquire them without ever having to touch your debit card. Even better, is the fact that the developers bring in a new set of summoners every wednesday in order to keep the game fresh and exciting. If you become attached to a summoner, you have the option of purchasing him or her (with money or riot points), meaning he won’t disappear from your list of available characters come next wednesday.

In conclusion? I’m in love, and addicted. There’s so much more I’ve missed out, like a powerful ranking system, fresh maps, character skins, runes. The list goes on and on. This is as good as it’s going to get for free to play games people, so I’d highly recommend you download right now.

Uncharted 2: Game Of The Year, Game Of The Year.

IGN 2009 Game of the Year

I don't think I've ever cringed more before when watching a video. This has singlehandly ruined this game for me.

IGN's so cheesy!

ATHENA!

image

I got God of War Collection about a week ago, and I love it. It’s so… uncaring. I think that’s the best way to put it. It’s relentless in how much it throws at you. This is a very difficult game indeed.

I say uncaring, because you have to go for ages without save points or even health for that matter. Some minor bosses release health if you kill them in certain ways, and often that’s the only way to progress with relative ease. By killing a huge enemy in a complex and difficult way. It’s insane!

Great game though. I’m about half way through the first one and enjoying it immensely.

The Original Dungeon Keeper 2009 Awards

So here it is. Did you bring your jacket? Can I get you a drink? It’s the first annual game of the year awards for 2009! Last year I didn’t bother, but this year I’m making it a tradition. I’ve devised seven categories and within each of them are the games that have left a mark on me this year.If you disagree with any of these selections, please leave a comment and tell me what you would have picked and I’ll do a further blog on what you all thought in a few days time. So here we go. The first award.

The “Most Fun I’ve Had All Year” Award:

Infamous

image

From it’s opening cut scene to it’s climatic conclusion, inFamous is gripping in it’s narrative, addictive in it’s game play and beautiful in it’s entirety. Criminally overlooked by the overall community as a “Prototype Clone”, inFamous is one of the most compelling and overall upsetting games I've played in years. The human elements of pain, isolation and corruption are presented on such a scale that it literally leaves you feeling… well rather depressed by the end of the ride. But it’s worth it, and no matter what path you choose, the conclusion will leave your jaw hanging wide open every time.

The “Oh… That’s Actually Quite Good!” Award:

Batman: Arkham Asylum

image

When I first heard about Arkham Asylum I didn’t even give it a second thought. I simply passed it off as another superhero action kids game that would clog up the shelves and sell by the bucket loads, even though it’d be about as fun as drowning. But when I played it, my whole perspective changed. This game is huge. This game is a masterpiece. This game could well be the runner up for my overall game of the year. I’ve never played a game that takes a franchise and exceeds expectations so much. The characterisation is perfect, the atmosphere is heavy and dark, the locations are bitter-sweet and the narrative slots very neatly and snugly within the Batman canon. I would even go as far as to recommend this over watching the Dark Night. It really is THAT good.

The “Continuing Tradition” Award:

The Sims 3

image

I bought this out of dedication. Same reason I bought Spore and Sim City Societies. I expected something abysmal, or the same as Sims 2 but with better graphics. What I got was the definitive Sims experience. If I could change one thing this year, it would be that I played more of the Sims 3. What appears to be the same old game, is actually a completely new game built entirely from scratch. Gone is the frustration, the difficulty and the tedium of the past incarnations. Here is a game that really does excel in every department, and I’d recommend this game to anyone with a brain cell. If anything, this game proves that maybe the world could survive without a Mr. Will Wright and his “Spores”.

The “I Told It Was Going To Be Good!” Award:

Resident Evil 5

image

To quote Chris in the opening scenes of Resident Evil 5, “Sometimes I wonder if it’s all worth fighting for…”. When it comes to Resident Evil, I can’t help but know exactly what he means. What is it worth fighting for? The desperate struggle to try and convince old fans that it’s worth playing the new incarnations. The impossible task of trying to educate newcomers that the old games are equally as pleasing (if not on the eye, then at least on the narratives and gameplay). The equally difficult task of trying to convince myself at the beginning of the year that Resident Evil 5 was going to be something worth fighting for. You know what? It is worth it, because Resident Evil 5 has given me 53 blissful hours of gameplay , two completions and a whole lot of fun. I adore this game, and you should too.

The “2009 is so 2008” Award:

Fallout 3

image

Slow at first, but as soon as it hooks you it simply will not let go. Give me a world that drips with as much satire, oozes with as much depth and shines with as much breathtaking beauty and I will eat my own face. Fallout 3 isn’t a game. It’s an experience, and it’s one that you will not soon forget. The reason it’s on this list? Because with the release of the new DLC packs this year, it was impossible to not be drawn back into the capital wasteland.

The “Faith In The Industry” Award:

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

image

If you haven’t already read my gushing review to this game, then you’re unaware on how much of an impact this game had on me. The world of Nathan Drake became perfect in this title, and it is the best game ever made. That’s a fact. This game will make you laugh out loud, it will make you shift forward to the edge of your seat in actual real tension more times that I wish to mention and most of all? You will walk away with a feeling of complete satisfaction. The same feeling you had when you first saw Star Wars, The Godfather, Fight Club or The Shawshank Redemption. I priceless piece of entertainment, all yours for £30.

The “Little Game = Big Surprises!” Award:

Burn Zombie Burn

image

This game impressed me in two ways. Firstly, it’s so tongue in cheek it’s entire face is bleeding. Secondly, it’s fun. This game is pure, 100% fun. You will sit down, you will play, you will enjoy it. It’s entertainment in it’s purest form and it’s an absolute corker of a title. If you’ve never bought a game from the PSN before, then this is a damn good start.

There we have it. The first annual Original Dungeon Keeper awards for 2009. Now all that’s left to say is Happy New Year, and I hope you all have a great 2010.

Bored On The Bus

image

I come home early from college on a Wednesday. This unfortunately means, I’m forced to ride the peasant wagon for about half an hour. And today, I left my earphones at home….

So there I was. Riding the bus. Listening to nothing more than this 8 year old scream incomprehensible nonsense,  interspersed only with a grating laugh that made me want to repeatedly slam my head against the seat in front of me… and I was bored. So bored in fact, that I wished (rather specifically for some reason) that I had a HTC Hero phone with the G2 operating system on it. Why? Well I’ll tell you why. Be patient.

See, this fabulous little invention is like the iPhone for people like me (i.e. Skint teenagers) and let’s you do the whole Internet thing that all phones do these days (apart from mine. This may surprise you, but phones aren’t really my forte. I only just got a camera on my phone, for example) and at that moment in time I wanted nothing more than to just sit and go on Facebook, Twitter and maybe (browser permitting) nFortress but I couldn’t. Because I was stuck on this metal cage of hell.

But then I thought… wait a minute. If I had said phone, then by the time I got home I’d have exhausted Facebook and Twitter…. and then what would I do for an hour once I got in? I would have already sorted out all my notifications and read the latest Tweets. I would have replied to all the latest posts on the forum and read all the latest news on a variety of news sites (such as CVG. Not BBC, don’t be daft). Then it occurred to me. This phone would quench my need for entertainment for half an hour, and then that would be it. I would go home and I would sit and I would be bored. This is all that technology does these days! It doesn’t keep us from being bored anymore because the bastard things are so efficient in their purpose that you’re left with more free time than before you got it.

image

Hence, why I sit and do this I suppose. Games on the Playstation 1 used to take about ten minutes to load up before you could play them. Nowadays I can get onto the online section of Call of Duty 6 within less than 48 seconds, and I haven’t made that up I timed myself. 48 seconds people. Within that time I can be searching for an online game. Hell, within the next twenty seconds I could be playing. It’s ridiculous!

So there you have it. My rant on why technology is shit.

Also, when I was on the bus an advert came on a screen that for the past ten minutes had been displaying adverts for bus passes and I absolutely crapped myself. Since when did that happen?

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like... December.

Can anyone suggest any ways of getting into the Christmas spirit? I'm really not in the mood this year for some reason, despite the fact that I'm drowning myself in Christmas music and my house is so full of decorations it's slowly pushing me into a festive coma.

Actually you know what? I know the reason why I'm not feeling like jolly old Saint Nick in a elf brothel. It's because of Call of Duty.

Normally at this time of year, I slowly revert back to old games that I had got from Christmas pasts. So you know, normally I would go back to Fallout 3, Far Cry 2 or even something earlier like Spyro 3 on the PlayStation or The Sims. But no. COD is so addictive it's keeping me hooked, and there's nothing linked to the Christmas season about it in any way. It's annoying.

Who knows. Maybe they'll release Santa hats or something.....

I think my best bet it so keep pushing myself into that coma.

Original Dungeon Keeper Podcast: Episode 1

So I've decided to do a podcast. It's pretty self explanatory. It's pretty awful as well I reckon but who am I to judge? If you guys like it then please leave a comment as I'd rather like to run with this idea for a little while longer than just a week.

Enjoy!

So Much Hate!

I was playing COD again tonight with some mates, and it was going OK and we were having fun, until we ended up playing Ground War with a bunch of Americans. This one kid in my party (who is often rather annoying, but he's a friend of my mates so I normally put up with him) started to swear his head off for no reason about them being American (I mean honestly, he was like Speedy Gonzales with turrets) and then this guy from our team told him to "Shut up you American C**t". Turns out the guy was Porterican but did this stop this kid? Nope, in fact he laid on the hate even more.

I ended up quitting and coming off altogether. It's just sad really, how worked up people get over something as silly as a game...

An Epic Gamer Indeed

I don't care that I've posted two videos in a row, and you're probably all after a more serious post but.. come on. What isn't great about this video?

Apart from the fact that it was probably planned?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Review

So a lot of you are going to see that this is my review and hopefully read it out of... I dunno, habit I guess. A lot of you however, aren't going to bother because you're so sick of hearing about this by now you actually want to physically stop playing Videogames. So to start, I'm going to tell you what's bad about Modern Warfare 2.

The campaign mode within MW2 is shockingly average. The story goes nowhere, and it feels like Infinity Ward have just recycled pages that were torn out of classic war films like Black Hawk Down and Red Dawn (You read the latter right. For a reason that makes practically no sense, the Russians invade America in a scene that isn't even a homage to Red Dawn, it just is Red Dawn. In fact, the level is even called "Wolverines") It's a mess basically. Whereas the first game didn't have much of a strength to it's narrative, MW2 doesn't even have a narrative. In it's place stands a long selection of twenty minute set pieces. Despite all this however, the campaign is enjoyable. Some scenes are shocking, some upsetting, some... downright tasteless but I won't go into that. Modern Warfare 2 may not be worth buying for the campaign alone but I would call you a fool if you didn't complete it. The campaign is, I must admit, my only niggle. For all it's joy and excitement, it is at the end of the day "Scripted, all the way down to the last bullet" as a friend so rightly put it.

But then, the campaign certainly isn't why people flocked in their millions to purchase MW2 and it's certainly not the reason why this blog has deteriorated since Tuesday. Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer is once again just as deliciously addictive as before. It hasn't changed dramatically, but how is that a bad thing? All additions to the experience make it just that little bit sweeter (Customised Kill streaks, additional XP from headshots, deathstreaks, more perks, more ranks and a fudge load of new weapons) and everything that's been removed (Mainly glitches and a few minor animations etc.) has been done so in order to make this the definitive arcade-Esq modern warfare multiplayer to date™.

The new game modes are good fun, the maps are all lovely and overall it's an amazing game. I'm having a whole lot of fun with this game and I have a feeling I will be for quite a long time. To me, this was worth the £45 price tag alone. If you liked COD4 and COD5, I have every confidence that you will adore what COD6 has to offer. If you were never a fan, then I doubt you'll like this at all.

On top of the multiplayer is the new Spec-Ops mode, which is basically the Challenge mode from Timesplitters Future Perfect with online play. Spec-Ops is a collection of segments from the main campaign, edited for two players with a time limit slapped on. It's great fun, and it ranges from fighting off waves of enemies, to fighting your way up a burning bridge to racing your mate in a snowmobile. It may not be as impressive as the multiplayer, but it's certainly fantastic fun to mess around with for a few hours.

All in all, Modern Warfare 2 (I'm getting sick of typing that) is a fantastic game worthy of it's global acknowledgement as a landmark within this years release schedule. All though it's not game of the year in my eyes, (Uncharted 2 beats it by a long shot) it's still a very important game.

Modern Warfare 2 represents the lad's mag of videogaming. Whereas games like Uncharted 2 are the experiences you cherish forever, like classic cinema or novels, Call of Duty is the game that you and a few mates always smile back on fondly. It's the game that requires, nay, demands you crack out a beer, get a few bags of crisps and lie back on your chair. It's the game that you'll want to get 1000 gamerscore on. It's the game you enjoy, regardless of what you're labelled as.

(When I say Lad's mag, I mean it metaphorically. There seems to be a lot more girls playing this than most online games on the Xbox.)

God Of War 3 Demo

I got an exclusive demo code for this today, so I decided to give it to my Girlfriend as seem as though she's a bigger fan of the series than I am.

After watching her play through it... well I was impressed. It's one of the best looking games I've ever seen, certainly the goriest and considering this was an early E3 demo from very early on in the development... It was jaw dropping.

I'm really going to have to play through these...

A Few Things...

Just wanted to chat about a few things today, without mentioning that game I've been talking about for a while now (Happy Friz?)

First up, it's been sort of confirmed that Activision has been working on a remake of the quite fantastic N64 Goldeneye for the... erm... Wii Shop. OK, so it's on the wrong bleeding console but still there . It's still being remade. Although knowing Nintendo It's probably just the N64 version with more waggle waggle.

Secondly, how good does Borderlands look please? A loot driven, cell shaded, Fallout 3-Esq RPG with online co-op? Dunno about you but that sounds like a pretty damn good game. I'll defiantly be picking this up.

Oh and lastly, Modern Warfare 2 will be joining us in just over a fortnight. I'm kinda excited. Actually if anything I'm almost intimidated because I'm buying it on the Xbox, meaning I have to play with everyone I know from College who had COD 4..... It's gonna be tough!

The Prince!

I started playing the new (ish) Prince of Persia game again today. I got it just after Christmas last year and never really got that far on it (about twenty minutes in i think).

I'm enjoying it though, it's good fun. It's one of those games that's just nice to play. The gameplay, storyline and even the graphics are just simple and pretty. It's just a one of those FUN games, you know?

Anyway, the Prince is voiced by Nolan North, the same guy who voiced Nathan Drake in Uncharted, so if anything I can just pretend I'm playing the next installment of the Uncharted series.... *sighs*

Graphics or Narrative? The Age Old War.

Since time began (presuming that time began in the mid to late 80's) there has been the never ending debate about what matters most within Videogames. Graphics or Narrative.

It's a dead cert that as you read this, you've instantly thought to yourself "Why, it's clearly narrative! Graphics don't matter diddly squat to me, the well informed, well educated Gamer that I am", and I don't blame you for saying that. I do however, think you're a complete liar. You do care about Graphics. If I told you to back and play the original Timesplitters for instance, you would flinch at the sight of it. We all care about what our games look like, all of us, me included. I challenge anyone to say to me that they've never purchased a game without at least considering what it's going to look like. We all care about graphics, but this doesn't necessarily mean we need them in order to enjoy our game.

First let's look at two examples. Crysis, released on the PC in 2007, and Bioshock released the same year. Now, Crysis is a pretty game. In fact it's a very VERY pretty game, to the extent where it's established itself as almost a tool of measuring the performance power of a computer instead of the joyous, sci-fi romp of which was the developers original intentions (I presume anyway). Everyones played it, everyones cooed over the photo realistic graphics.... But how many people have finished it? I never finished it, nor do I have any intention of finishing it either. I played as much I needed to play, and as soon as the novelty of the graphics had worn off I was gone. Never to look back again either. Now I know this doesn't apply to everyone, but it's the same for most good looking games released recently. Crysis, Far Cry 2.... pretty much every game released on the Unreal 3 engine. They're all nothing more than bland, two dimensional videogames that don't really ever have the potential of being anything great.

Bioshock on the other hand, released the same year remember, may not have been as visually stunning but had a far more intelligent storyline than in Crysis (which, I may add, could have been partly due to the over saturation of "A Big masculine male in a big masculine suit goes to shoot Aliens/Zombies/Other big masculine men in big masculine suits" games being released as of late). The world of Rapture was intriguing, dark and disturbing and the underlying morals found within Ayn Rand's classic novel "Atlas Shrugged" made Bioshock an absolute literary classic, never mind a cracking good game to boot. However, it cannot be denied, the graphics were very very good.

This is the problem with modern day videogaming, all games are graphically, very impressive and it's as if great narrative is simply an optional extra that the developer decides upon. Mirrors Edge, a very technically superior game, did not need the dystopian future plot in order to sell itself. The gimmick of first person freerunning was a good enough selling point as it was, and this is proven in the time trials mode (perhaps a look at what Mirrors Edge almost was, if magazine previews from the pre-release phase are to be believed). In order to truly understand which is more important, you have to look back to around the late nineties and in some cases the eighties.

I have a task for you. Go find a ROM or a real copy of the original Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or.... let's say the original Fallout. Go on, go do it.

Now I bet once you've finished tutting over the horrendous graphics (or in the case of Hitchhikers, no graphics) you're going to get completely into it, to the point where graphics no longer matter. That's the beauty of older games. There was a distinct point where games designers released that there was more potential within the medium than simply making Object A destroy Object B and started writing in depth narratives that were as compelling as they were entertaining. The great thing? Because graphics were so uninspiring back then, the developers tended to focus more on the story aspects instead the visuals onscreen. Sure, time was spent on them but not as long as today, which is my point. In some cases, modern day technology has killed the great videogame narrative. I believe that if videogames were still the 32bit pixel mash ups that they were in yesteryear, a higher percentage of new releases would be inspired and original pieces.

In conclusion? Well what is there to say? Graphics are important, no matter what people claim otherwise. If it's visually pleasing on the eye, you will enjoy it more. Imagine if Team Fortress 2 had dropped it's cartoon style in favour for a more COD4 approach for instance. Think it would be as fun? However, this isn't always the case. Bioshock for example has a narrative that is so ingenious that you literally stop caring about the narrative and it's the same with classic adventure games and most Playstation 1 titles such as Metal Gear Solid and PC classics such as System Shock 2 and Half-Life. In these cases, great visuals are not needed for they rely on narrative so much.

Still, it has to be said that Videogaming is a visual format. Visuals are required, and as are narratives of all various degrees of excellence and intelligence. But as Uncharted 2 has recently proven, breath taking visuals and incredible story telling can sometimes, on rare occasions, be found within a single game.

All in all? Well, it's all down to one simple thing isn't it. Gameplay. A game can have a great narrative, it can have stunning graphics but if it plays like a dead horse? Then it's worth nothing in the eyes of the modern day gamer.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow Of Chernobyl

I bought S.T.A.L.K.E.R (feck it, I can't be arsed with the Dots anymore) about a year ago on one of those two for one deals at Game and for some reason never bothered to play it. I go with the whole "My PC couldn't run it" but it could, just not on full graphics.

Anyway, today I decided to install it and play it. First opinion? It's good! Atmosphere's incredible, weapons are all nice and realistic... kind of. The story seems to be the usual sort of, rugged manly affair and the characters are all lovely and Russian.

So far, so Fallout (well... with more Russians) especially as though everythings all irradiated and mutant... ey. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing of course, because it's a formula that's been proven to work extremely well. Shove it into a different, more realistic scenario and you have what could be effectively a very worthy contender for the throne of post apocalyptic role playing games. Ok, so Stalker isn't an RPG but you get the point.

More info as I play through it!
