Feeling Rather RETRO

I found a load of old DOS games today, and after a bit of a fiddle (Damn you Vista...) I finally got them to run!

So for the past few hours I've been playing classic games such as DOOM 2, Theme Hospital, Sim City 2000 and good old Warcraft 2! It's been brilliant. I get to open them in DOS, play them as they were meant to be played. Everythings there, the incredible gameplay, the 90's graphics, the catchy tunes and the god awful frustration trying to get them work.

Truly a blast from the past :')

Theme Park World

Ok so I haven't blogged in.... 3 days. For me that's a long time I know, but I just haven't been playing games much this month due to the sheer amount of work I've been having to do for college. Anyway, I actually managed to play a game yesterday for an hour, and this game was Theme Park World.

This game brings back so many memories it's unbelievable. I used to LOVE this game. My Dad upgraded the computer when it first came out so he could play it, I devoted myself to it for about 8 months of my childhood life and I remember quite fondly waking up at 5AM on a school morning so I could play it for a few hours before I went in. Ahhh, to be young and in love with a strategy management sim!

Ok, so it hasn't aged well. The graphics are terrible, the gameplay mechanics are abysmal and that little bastard who keeps popping up in the right hand corner needs to be shot (My mate was playing this on Friday, and he actually began to cry because of the sheer amount of times he went on about patrol areas. No joke). But there's something so..... Fresh about this game. It's simple enough to get into to, there's plenty of rides and shops to set up and although there's only four parks to mess around in, it has a surprising amount of depth to it...

Actually playing it makes me want to play Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 again... Hmmm.

Golden Oldie's

I hate it when people talk about "putting on the rose tinted glasses" and how old games are only worth playing because of the nostalgia they generate. Personally, I find it rather degrading. Old games are good in one of  two ways. Their either still good today or you have fond memories of playing them. Both, mean that at some point they were enjoyable.

When discussing old games I always have to mention two. Firstly, Dungeon Keeper as it was the first game I ever played and adored. Secondly, Theme Hospital as it was a game I actually despised as a child yet grew fond of it as a teenager. What really interesting, is that their both developed by Bullfrog. That's not the point of the Blog but it's worth a mention.

So recently, Theme Hospital has found it's way into my computer and I'm hooked again. I'm already halfway through and the pressures on. What's so great about old games is that they were always so challenging, so unique. They always had the right amount of features and worked perfectly, unlike most modern day games where I'm normally sitting there wishing that the developer had included X Y and Z.  Although, this was only true for certain games between around 1997 and 1999 in my humble opinion.
